Service or technology in this application

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is intended for guiding coronary stent insertion in patients that are eligible for coronary revascularisation. OCT is an intracoronary imaging technology that uses infra-red light to obtain cross-sectional images capable of accurately determining vessel size and plaque morphology. OCT can identify features enabling optimal stent implantation (i.e., expansion, apposition), as well as identifying the potential for stent failure.

Type: Therapeutic technology

Medical condition this application addresses

Obstructive coronary artery disease reflects a large range of clinical conditions caused by myocardial ischaemia (a lack of blood flow to the heart tissue) due to narrowing of the coronary arteries.

Most often the narrowing of coronary arteries is caused by atherosclerosis, i.e. build-up of plaque. When blood to the heart muscle is completely blocked, a patient experiences a heart attack or myocardial infarction. In patients with obstructive coronary artery disease a coronary stent can be implanted to improve blood flow to the heart tissue, also referred to as coronary revascularisation.
