About us

The Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) is an independent expert body that assesses health services and technologies for public funding. We help to ensure funding goes to services and technologies that are effective and value for money.

We are an independent, non-statutory committee. The Australian Government set up MSAC in 1998 to assess medical services for funding through the Medicare Benefits Schedule. We now also assess a wider range of health services and technologies for other funding programs.

Committee structure

MSAC is the main committee. We have an executive group and 2 standing subcommittees – the PICO Advisory Subcommittee (PASC) and the Evaluation Subcommittee (ESC).

What we do

We assess applications for public funding of health services and technologies. Our main role is to advise the federal health minister on which ones are effective and value for money.

Members

Our members include experts in areas such as clinical medicine, health economics and consumer matters.

Meetings

MSAC and our subcommittees usually meet 3 times a year to review and assess applications for public funding.
