PGD is a technique which is applied within the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) process, to detect whether an embryo created in vitro has a specific genetic defect. PGD is defined as: testing of cells from pre-implantation embryos for the detection of genetic and/or chromosomal disorders before embryo transfer.

Description of Medical Condition

PGD is used by couples who know that they carry a serious genetic disorder (and are therefore at risk of having affected offspring) to have a child free of the disorder.
