Description of Medical Service

Implantable loop recorders (ILR) monitor the electrical activity of the heart, continuously storing information as electrocardiograms, and recording abnormal activity such as arrhythmia. The ILR is implanted under local anaesthesia.

Description of Medical Condition

There are two medical conditions that are relevant to this service: cryptogenic stroke defined as cerebral ischemia of obscure or unknown origin; and atrial fibrillation that is a common cardiac arrhythmia.
