This application requests the creation of a series of new MBS items for gender affirming surgeries. Gender affirming surgeries refer to a constellation of procedures intended to align a person’s body with their gender identity.

Gender incongruence is characterised by a marked and persistent difference between an individual´s experienced gender and the assigned sex, which often leads to a desire to ‘transition’, in order to live and be accepted as a person of the experienced gender.

Meetings to consider this application

Outcome details

Application 1754 will be considered in two-stages. In the first stage, ESC and MSAC will assess the clinical evidence in the applicant-developed assessment report. This will enable MSAC to advise on the appropriate approach for the economic evaluation, which is the second stage.

The MSAC meeting on 3-4 April 2025 will consider the first stage only, consideration of the second stage will occur at a later MSAC meeting. 

An outcome will only be available after both the first and second stages of the assessment report have been considered by MSAC.
