Assessment outcomes

We advise the federal health minister on whether to support an application for funding and explain our advice in a public summary document. We may defer finalising our advice if we need more information. The final decision on whether to provide funding is a matter for government.

What the possible outcomes are

The possible outcomes for a suitable application are:

  • supported – we support the application for funding
  • partially supported – we support the application under certain conditions (for example, we may only support funding for certain patient groups)
  • not supported – we do not support the application for funding
  • deferred – we are waiting for extra information before we finalise our advice
  • not applicable – the application was withdrawn before we considered it
  • other – outcomes not captured by the above.

For deferred applications, the extra information we need may include:

The public summary document explains the outcome in detail.

While we are still assessing an application, it will have an outcome of pending.

Notification of outcome

About 8 to 10 weeks after the relevant MSAC meeting, we aim to:

Public summary document

A public summary document for an application includes:

  • our advice on the outcome
  • the reasons for our advice
  • a summary of what we considered
  • what needs to be done before acting on our advice
  • a summary of the consultation input and consumer issues
  • a summary of the main discussions we (and our subcommittees) had about the application.

Before publishing, we give applicants a chance to provide comments and request the:

  • correction of any errors
  • redaction of any in-confidence content.

For more detail, see public summary document for applicants.

How to view outcomes

Assessment outcomes and public summary documents are available on the relevant application page. Search the applications listing for the application you are interested in.

You can also view all applications that have an outcome of:

If an application is not supported or deferred

Assessment outcomes are not subject to appeal. Applicants can:

  • request a debrief with our Chair, our secretariat and the relevant policy team
  • reapply after addressing our issues or concerns.

If an application is supported for funding

We do not decide funding or implement our advice for supported applications.

The policy team responsible for the relevant funding program will progress our advice to government and, if supported by government, implement the advice.
