Position emission tomography dopaminergic imaging is a way of diagnosing Parkinson disease from non-Parkinson disease, so that the correct treatments can be used and started earlier, potentially making a difference to the quality of life of those affected.

Parkinson disease, in some cases, is not easy to diagnose because the signs and symptoms are not always standard and there are other conditions that can mimic the disease. Evaluating Parkinsonism may help some patients with a diagnosis of Parkinson disease who do not respond to standard treatment.
